June 14, (THEWILL) – Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has called on the two major political parties, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to attempt to field a Muslim President and Muslim Vice President in the forthcoming presidential election, saying that doing so would amount to insensitivity to the yearning of Nigerians for a balanced ticket.
Speaking in his Ikoyi, Lagos office during an interaction with journalists on Tuesday, George said that taking a Muslim- Muslim option will amount to not taking people’s concern into consideration.
“A couple of years ago, the Social Democratic Party, SDP put Chief Moshood Kolawole Abiola and Chief Babagana Kinginbe , both Muslims as Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates, that was in 1993. People didn’t bothered then and they won.The situation is not the same now. Only few days ago, worshippers at a Catholic church in Owo were killed right there in the Church. To think of a Muslim- Muslim ticket now will be insensitive, utter madness and it will be like putting a petrol into a fire,” he said.
On the calibre of people that have emerged as presidential candidates of their respective political parties, George said Nigerians should probe into their past.
“Nigerians must ask the candidates questions about their past. It must not be through a third party. They should explain their past to Nigerians themselves. They must tell Nigerians the schools they attended and they must explain their past including how they made their stupendous wealth”, George said.
George also called for restructuring of the country , saying the current system only suited the military regime and not suitable for democracy.
He said the report of the 2014 national conference organised by the administration of Goodluck Jonathan will solve all the present problems facing the country and therefore counselled President Muhammadu Buhari to dust up the document and implement it.
