January 23, (THEWILL) — Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved the constitution of a high-powered committee to organize a befitting state burial for the former First Lady of the state, Chief Lucia Onabanjo, who passed away on January 12, 2026.
The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi. Other members include the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, and the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Mr. Dare Alebiosu.
Governor Abiodun announced the move on Thursday during a condolence visit to the Onabanjo family residence in Ijebu-Ode.
Describing the late matriarch as an exemplary figure who defined the role of a First Lady with grace and selfless service, the Governor emphasized that the state would be fully involved in honoring the widow of the state’s first civilian governor, Chief Bisi Onabanjo.
“Mama lived for 100 years and would have turned 101 this year. She lived a ripe and fulfilled life, leaving behind legacies of impact that call for the celebration of a well-lived, purposeful existence,” Abiodun said.
The Governor noted that Lucia Onabanjo, a trained teacher, was the silent strength behind her husband during his historic tenure from 1979 to 1983—an era that birthed landmark institutions like the Olabisi Onabanjo University and Ogun State Television (OGTV).
He described her as a devoted homemaker and a “titan” of Ijebu land whose conduct reflected deep faith and humility.
“Though we mourn the departure of a great woman, we should be grateful that she lived a life worthy of emulation. No matter how long a man lives on earth, death is certain. It is only a question of when God will call us home,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Barrister Bukola Onabanjo recounted her mother’s final moments and expressed profound gratitude to the Governor and the people of Ogun State for their solidarity.
She noted that the family takes solace in the godly values and disciplined upbringing the centenarian instilled in her children.
Lucia Onabanjo, born on October 26, 1925, was a pioneer of the democratic era in Ogun State.
