July 29, (THEWILL) — Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called for deeper economic collaboration with Oyo State in the areas of food production and security, emphasizing the need for both states to harness their shared potential for regional development.
Governor Abiodun made the call on Tuesday during a meeting with his Oyo State counterpart, Governor Seyi Makinde, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Speaking with journalists after a closed-door session, Abiodun said the two neighbouring states share strong cultural, historical, and economic ties that must be leveraged for the mutual benefit of their people.
Abiodun said; “I have come to see my brother, Governor Seyi Makinde, to discuss matters of mutual interest.
“Ogun State was part of the old Western Region, with Ibadan as its capital. We have very strong ties, both culturally and economically, with the people and government of Oyo State.”
Highlighting the influx of major investors into the subregion, Abiodun noted the importance of synergy between both states, especially in agriculture, to address food security challenges and drive sustainable growth.
He stated, “At a time like this, it is important that we strengthen our economic relationship, particularly in the agricultural sector, as we pursue food security and sovereignty.
“Our discussions focused on how we can collaborate to eat what we grow and grow what we eat, positioning our region as the country’s breadbasket.”
Governor Abiodun commended the Oyo State government’s efforts in agriculture and noted similar initiatives by Ogun State through its farming activities in Odeda, Imeko, and Yewa North—border communities shared with Oyo.
He also stressed the importance of security in facilitating economic development, praising the role of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, in maintaining regional stability.
He said, “Security remains a catalyst for socio-economic development.
“The contributions of Amotekun in intelligence gathering and other security functions have been vital to the safety and progress of our region.”
