April 16, (THEWILL) – A former lawmaker representing Imo North senatorial district, Athan Achonu, has emerged winner of the primary election of the Labour Party (LP) for the November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo State.

Chairman of the Election Panel and Governor-elect of Abia State, Alex Otti, declared Achonu the winner of the primary, having scored the highest number of votes.

Achonu polled 134 votes to defeat his closest rival, Major General Jack Ogunewe, who scored 121.

“Athan Achonu, having certified the requirements by polling the highest number of votes in the primary exercise, is hereby returned as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Imo state,” Otti declared, noting that the exercise was credible.

Achonu was elected into the Senate in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His victory was, however, nullified in December 2015 at the Court of Appeal, Abuja.
