April 16, (THEWILL) — African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) posted a profit of US$1.15 billion (about ₦1.5 trillion) for 2025, up from US$973.5 million (₦1.3 trillion) recorded in 2024, reflecting stronger earnings and continued balance sheet expansion.
The improved performance was largely driven by interest income, which rose to roughly ₦4.2 trillion at an exchange rate of ₦1,343/$1, compared with ₦4.1 trillion in the previous year. This increase underscores steady growth in lending activity, with loans and advances climbing to ₦45 trillion.
Non-interest income also strengthened, as net fees and commissions increased to ₦252 billion from ₦232 billion. Additional support came from other operating income of ₦101.3 billion, exchange gains of ₦32 billion, and fair value gains of ₦70 billion, which helped cushion rising operating costs.
Total assets expanded by 19.9 percent year-on-year to ₦56.7 trillion, driven mainly by growth in the bank’s core lending operations. Loans and advances rose to ₦45.7 trillion from ₦38.9 trillion, indicating sustained credit expansion.
Asset quality showed mixed trends. Stage 1 loans representing performing assets grew to ₦44.3 trillion, while Stage 2 loans declined to ₦1.0 trillion, suggesting some improvement in credit risk. However, Stage 3 loans increased to ₦76.8 billion, pointing to a modest rise in impaired exposures.
Liabilities rose to ₦45 trillion, supported by borrowings of ₦21 trillion, while shareholders’ funds increased to ₦11.2 trillion.
Looking ahead, the bank expressed confidence in growth opportunities across Africa and the Caribbean despite global economic headwinds.
