March 31, (THEWILL) — African Export-Import Bank has raised $2 billion through a three-year dual-tranche syndicated term loan facility, marking the largest borrowing in the bank’s history. The milestone was announced in a press statement dated March 30, 2026, following the conclusion of the transaction on March 9, 2026.
Described as Afreximbank’s “largest-ever syndicated facility”, the loan was sourced from a consortium of international lenders rather than a single creditor, reflecting strong global confidence in the bank’s creditworthiness. Initially targeting $1.5 billion, the facility attracted overwhelming interest, prompting the bank to cap the deal at $2 billion to accommodate high demand.
The financing comprises two tranches: $1.73 billion in a US dollar facility and €228 million in a euro-denominated tranche, bringing the total to $2 billion equivalent. Proceeds will be used to refinance existing obligations and support general corporate activities.
Chandi Mwenebungu, Managing Director, Treasury and Markets, and Group Treasurer, described the deal as a testament to sustained international trust. “This transaction is the largest ever syndicated facility borrowing by Afreximbank. It is a clear demonstration of global investors’ confidence in the Bank’s credit story and affirms our robust access to international markets”, he said.
The successful syndication reinforces Afreximbank’s standing as a key player in African trade finance and development, underscoring its ability to mobilise substantial resources to support economic growth and facilitate trade across the continent. The bank’s achievement sets a new benchmark for future capital-raising efforts in Africa.
