September 13, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike from next week if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands over the removal of fuel subsidy.
The National Assistant General Secretary of the NLC, Christopher Onyeka, who disclosed this on Tuesday, said the strike would be a shutdown of commercial and economic activities across the country.
THEWILL reports that the Congress had on Tuesday, September 5, embarked on a two-day warning strike, to demonstrate readiness for the indefinite strike after a 21-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to address the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on September 2, said its National Executive Committee (NEC) had resolved that workers embarked “on a total and indefinite shutdown of the nation within 14 working days or 21 days until steps are taken by the Government to address the excruciating mass suffering and impoverishment being experienced around the country.”
Speaking with The Punch Newspaper on Tuesday, Onyeka accused the Federal Government of insensitivity to the hardship inflicted on poor Nigerians by the removal of fuel subsidy on petrol.
He questioned the motive by the Federal Government to share a bag of rice to a dozen citizens, while reportedly giving N100m palliative to each member of the National Assembly.
“If the government fails to provide the appropriate responses to our demands, we encourage you to maintain your steadfast resolve. The same passion and determination that fuelled this warning strike will be crucial if we find ourselves compelled to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike”, the Congress said.
