June 23, (THEWILL) – The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for what it described as his unwavering commitment to the growth and sustainability of indigenous airlines.
In a statement signed by its Vice President, Chief Allen Onyema, the association praised Keyamo’s proactive and reform-driven leadership, describing him as “God-sent to Nigeria’s aviation industry.”
“Love him or hate him, believe it or not, Festus Keyamo is absolutely God-sent to Nigeria’s aviation industry,” the statement read.
It added, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a brilliant choice in appointing him to such a strategic role.”
Since assuming office in August 2023, Keyamo has launched a five-point agenda aimed at repositioning the aviation sector, with one of its key priorities being the support and sustenance of local airline businesses, while ensuring they meet international standards.
AON said the Minister has shown uncommon political will and a deep understanding of the aviation industry’s unique challenges.
Through targeted interventions and policy reforms, Keyamo has not only championed the interests of local operators but also elevated Nigeria’s global aviation profile.
“This Minister has repositioned Nigeria’s aviation industry and improved the country’s standing internationally,” AON stated.
It added, “In the coming weeks, Nigerian airlines will begin receiving dry-leased aircraft—a landmark development that will enable operators to expand their fleets more affordably and efficiently.”
The association also commended President Tinubu for backing Keyamo’s efforts and giving him the mandate to improve the aviation sector, particularly with regard to strengthening indigenous operators.
“We applaud the Federal Government for taking a progressive approach in addressing the capacity challenges faced by local airlines, rather than demonising them for their limitations—a negative trend we witnessed in the past. This new direction reflects true leadership and patriotic pragmatism,” AON added.
The body reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to achieve a more competitive, safe, and reliable aviation sector in Nigeria.
