March 25, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has raised concerns over the rising cost of transportation across the state, calling on the government to urgently intervene to regulate fares and ease the burden on citizens.
This formed part of the resolutions reached at the Union’s Congress held on Tuesday, at the Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the Congress said the steady increase in transport fares was taking a toll on residents, particularly journalists whose work demands constant mobility, urging authorities to introduce measures to check arbitrary pricing and provide relief for commuters.
Endorsed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, the communiqué also passed a vote of confidence on the Senator representing Eket Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Dr Ekong Sampson, citing what it described as his impressive performance in the Senate.
It further commended his recent appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, describing it as well-deserved.
Members equally applauded the leadership of the State Council under Nsibiet John for securing victory in a Court of Appeal case against the union and initiating the furnishing of the Patience Umo Eno Hall.
The Congress, which reaffirmed the critical role of journalists in sustaining democracy, also received Senator Sampson and Gaza Gbefwi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals.
It commended the Press Centre Management Committee for maintaining the facility and urged members to sustain discipline and collective responsibility in the use of the centre.
