SAN FRANCISCO, October 16, (THEWILL) – The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has declared the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, Gani Adams, as the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, an office last occupied by the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

Making the declaration in his palace on Sunday, Alaafin said a letter of appointment had been issued to Gani Adams to the effect that he will be the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland.

The office of the Generalismo of Yorubaland was last occupied by Abiola, who died in the detention camp of the late Nigeria’s military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, in 1998 for refusing to trade his presidential mandate for freedom.

It is said that since his demise, many have refused to accept the title as there are fears that Aare Ona Kakanfo usually ends up badly.

The announcement of Gani Adams, who emerged out of five aspirants considered for the position, came as part of the side attractions to the celebration of the 79th Birthday of Alaafin, which held in Oyo palace at the weekend.
