May 22, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s proposed $500 million Airbus Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility is facing growing scrutiny from aviation analysts and industry stakeholders, with experts questioning the long-term commercial viability of the ambitious project.
The planned facility, which forms part of the Federal Government’s aviation expansion strategy, is expected to position Nigeria as a regional aircraft maintenance hub capable of servicing Airbus fleets across West and Central Africa.
However, aviation experts say the economics of the global MRO industry are far more complex than infrastructure development alone, warning that profitability depends heavily on airline traffic volume, technical certifications, long-term servicing contracts, and stable operating conditions.
Industry stakeholders note that Nigeria’s aviation market remains one of the largest in Africa by passenger traffic, but local airlines still operate relatively small fleets and face persistent liquidity challenges, high operating costs, and foreign exchange pressures.
These realities could limit the volume of maintenance demand required to sustain a large-scale Airbus-focused facility.
The proposed hub is also expected to compete directly with already established African MRO centres in Ethiopia, Morocco, and South Africa, where stronger aviation ecosystems, technical capacity, and airline partnerships already exist.
Experts further warn that the project carries significant foreign exchange exposure because aircraft components, spare parts, software systems, and technical support services are largely dollar-denominated.
With Nigeria’s aviation sector already battling elevated interest rates, rising energy costs, and currency volatility, analysts say maintaining profitability may become difficult if projected regional demand falls short.
Despite the concerns, supporters of the project believe the facility could significantly reduce the hundreds of millions of dollars Nigerian airlines spend annually on overseas aircraft maintenance.
The project is also expected to support technology transfer, local manpower development, job creation, and foreign investment within Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
Industry stakeholders, however, insist that a comprehensive commercial feasibility study will be critical before full project execution begins, stressing that long-term sustainability will depend on strategic airline partnerships, transparent financing structures, operational efficiency, and the government’s ability to build a globally competitive aviation support ecosystem.
