November 07, (THEWILL) – The returning officer for Orumba North LGA, Dr. Michael Otu, has denounced the collated governorship election results he submitted on Sunday to the State Returning Officer, Prof. Florence Obi.
Dr. Otu, who tendered the results before Prof. Obi, at the State headquarter of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Awka, the Anambra state capital, alleged signing the results under duress.
He said he did not believe in the result and accused the INEC official attached to him of conniving with those who disrupted the process.
Dr. Otu said there was no election in the entire Local government area, adding that he was tear-gassed and almost collapsed.
He said a crisis fomented by policemen led to his signing the result under duress.
“I signed a report I didn’t believe in. I signed it under duress. I was tear gassed. I was locked in the toilet, until a policeman smuggled me out.
“I could not even go out to ease myself. They were monitoring me up and down. At one point, I saw that my life was in danger, so I had to sign the results they prepared. I called out to my colleagues to tell them that I was in danger here”, he narrated.
Responding to the allegation, the electoral officer who did not give her name, accused the returning officer of not knowing anything about collating election results.
“This man here has said so many things against me. But I observed that he has no experience in collating election results.
“This man does not know his left from his right. The result is full of mutilation. He does not know the difference between conducting elections and collating results”, she said.
Victor Umeh, the agent representing APGA accused the collation officer of being “hired to destroy this election.” He said his party won the election in the LGA, adding that Otu has no basis for his story.
Prof. Florence Obi, said that she was told about the crisis in the local government area.
“This is the only local government I had a distress call from and I had to call the commissioner of police and tell him that the lives of my staff are in danger”, she said.
The Commission has now declared a break for its officials to look into the documents and allegations raised by Dr. Otu on the Orumba North LGA.
Also, INEC on Sunday said there was no election in the entire Ihiala local government.
Meanwhile, the Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Professor Charles Soludo, has further widened the margin in the results of eight local governments in addition to the 11, earlier declared by INEC.
Soludo has won in 17 of the 19 LGAs election results so far declared by INEC. His party, APGA polled 99,159; followed by the PDP, with 49,475 votes and the APC, 40,270 votes
