January 29, (THEWILL) — Arsenal claimed top spot in the Champions League table with a 3-2 victory over Kairat Almaty on Wednesday, completing a perfect eight wins from eight in the league stage. Kai Havertz marked his return to the starting lineup with a goal and two assists after almost a year out through injury.
Manager Mikel Arteta made 11 changes from the English Premier League defeat to Manchester United, with progression already confirmed. The Germany international had not started since February 2025, but made an immediate impact, providing an early through ball for Viktor Gyokeres to score in the second minute.
Jorginho equalised from the penalty spot after Riccardo Calafiori fouled him, but Havertz restored the lead in the 15th minute. The forward cut inside from the right to finish with his left foot following a pass from captain Ben White. Gabriel Martinelli added a third before the interval, tapping in after Havertz’s cross was deflected goalwards by Gyokeres.
The match settled after half-time, with both Havertz and Calafiori withdrawn at the break. Gabriel Jesus had a late goal ruled out for offside, whilst Kairat substitute, Ricardinho, headed in Valeri Gromyko’s cross four minutes into added time.
The final scoreline flattered the visitors, with all three Arsenal goals coming inside the opening 36 minutes at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners attacked relentlessly throughout the first half before easing off following the interval.
