DecemberThe Acting Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sir, James Iorpuu, has confirmed the rise in the Internally Displaced Persons Camp to seventeen following renewed attacks by Fulani herdsmen.
Speaking at the distribution of food and non-food items for the displaced in Makurdi on Monday, Sir Iorpuu listed the new camps to include Afiagh, Ayati, Iorja and Kyado in Ukum Local Government Area where some victims are living with their relatives.
According to him, catering for IDPs in the State is beyond the financial scope of the State Government, noting that despite the development, the Alia administration is taking care of them within the available resources.
The SEMA boss further revealed that following the visit of the Minister of Humanitarian and Disaster Management to the State, the Agency has received bundles of zinc, cement and wood construction of a cluster housing scheme at Mbagwen in Makurdi Local Government Area in which work will commence by next week.
The National Emergency Management Agency, according to Sir Iorpuu, has donated 6 pieces of wrappers for the 14 camps, 300 men’s wear, 150 mattresses, 300 children’s wear and 200 blankets.
He explained that due to the activities of some hoodlums, the agency decided to distribute items in Makurdi while other camps will take their turn on Tuesday.
Items for distribution are 4,200 bags of 25kg rice; 2,810 bags of 25kg beans; 2,370 bags of 25kg Gari; 4,155 cartoons of indomie; litres of groundnut; 191 litres of red oil, 433 cartoons of Maggi, and 266 bags of Sugar.
Others to benefit from the food items are rehabilitation centre Apir, Special School for the Deaf and Dumb at Vandeikya and Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Council, respectively.
