SAN FRANCISCO, August 14, (THEWILL) – President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has described as inhuman and barbaric the cold blooded murder of no fewer than 44 worshippers at the Konduga, Borno State Mosque, saying “nothing can be so cruel and callous than this crime against humanity.”
Senator Mark, in a reaction to the violent attacks which left scores of others injured and property damaged, urged security operatives to review their strategies for more effective results just as asked the perpetrators to have a rethink.
The Senate President, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, lamented the renewed hostilities by the insurgents at a time when people were heaving a sigh of relief that the state of emergency declared in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States on account of the unabating violence was yielding good results.
“The continued violence, killing of innocent and unarmed people and destruction of property by the insurgents cannot be justified or contribute towards achieving whatever their objectives may be.
“There is need for the perpetrators and their financials to make a u turn and embrace peace. It is only a mad man that throws stone into the market place or village square without thinking about the consequences. The Federal government has opened windows for peace and dialogue. These people should take advantage of it and end this violence.
“I know for a fact that no religion preaches violence or hatred. Every religion preaches peace and indeed harmonious relationship. So, nobody should hide under any guise to commit crime . This is crime against humanity, ” Mark stated.
He therefore pleaded with security operatives not to be deterred by the unabating attacks but be further spurred to protect lives and property especially in the crises-prone areas.
Senator Mark also enjoined religious and traditional rulers in the crisis ridden communities to continue to support and cooperate with security operatives in order to eradicate the menace of these insurgents.
He also sympathised with the government and people of Borno State, especially the victims of the violent attacks and asked that efforts should be intensified to protect citizens at all times.
