BEVERLY HILLS, October 05, (THEWILL) – Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, Monday in Maiduguri, the state capital, forwarded the name of his former Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Youth Empowerment, Alhaji Usman Mamman Durkwa, to the state House of Assembly for approval as his new deputy.
If approved by the state lawmakers, Durkwa will replace the late deputy governor, Alhaji Zannah Umar Mustapha, who died in Yola in August while on an official assignment to the Adamawa state capital.
The nomination of the new deputy governor, according to Shettima’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau, was contained in a letter, dated Monday, October 5, addressed to the speaker of the State House of Assembly.
According to Gusau, the governor forwarded the letter in accordance with the powers conferred on him by Section 191 Sub-Section (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended).
The letter, according to Gusau, stated: “I have the honour to convey vide this letter the name of Hon. Usman Mamman Durkwa for confirmation as Deputy Governor of Borno State following the demise of Alhaji Zannah Umar Mustapha on 15th August, 2015.
”I wish to reassure the Honourable House of the continuous cooperation of the executive arm and solicit for confirmation of the nominee, please. Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.”
Gusau said: “Given the very respectful and cordial working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government in Borno State, Governor Shettima looks forward to the Assembly’s accelerated consideration and kind approval.”
Gusau disclosed that Durkwa, a seasoned politician, was first appointed as commissioner by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and has manned different ministries, which include land and survey, environment and religious affairs, since his first appointment.
