BEVERLY HILLS, February 21, (THEWILL) – Some female students abducted by Boko Haram from Government Girls Technical College in Dapchi, Bursari LGA, Yobe state have been rescued by the military in a development that confirms speculations that the terrorists abducted some girls on Monday night when they raided the school and town in search of food.
Approximately 80 schoolgirls are believed to have been rescued on Wednesday at a border town between Borno and Yobe after the military received intelligence.
The exact number of girls will be confirmed when authorities visit the school on Thursday, said Mohammed Alamin, the Yobe State Commissioner of Education.
A follow up statement Wednesday night by Abdullahi Bego, spokesman to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, said: “The Yobe State Government hereby informs the public that some of the girls at Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) whose school was attacked by Boko Haram terrorists last Monday have been rescued by gallant officers and men of the Nigerian Army from the terrorists who abducted them.
“The rescued girls are now in the custody of the Nigerian Army.
“We will provide more details about their number and condition in due course.
“Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who is very grateful for the gallantry and hard work of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army involved in the operation, is monitoring the situation closely and will make a statement in due course.”
THEWILL recalls that the all female school had done a head count on Wednesday and discovered that at least 94 students were unaccounted for.
President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier directed the military to take over security at the school and also despatched a delegation led by the Minister of Defence to the town to get first hand information on the development.
