February 18, (THEWILL) — The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, has called for deeper collaboration among African central banks and development finance institutions to accelerate growth, industrialisation, and job creation across the continent while advancing climate resilience.
Speaking in Cairo at the Egypt 30by30 Programme organised by the Central Bank of Egypt and the International Finance Corporation, Cardoso said Africa must pursue inclusive economic expansion alongside decarbonisation, noting that the initiative reflects a shared continental vision for a resilient, climate-aware, and sustainable future.
He reaffirmed the CBN’s commitment, in partnership with the World Bank Group and regional stakeholders, to strengthening financial system resilience, advancing green finance, and deepening cross-border cooperation to position African economies to withstand global shocks and thrive long term. According to him, credibility remains the foundation of resilience, with disciplined and transparent reforms in Nigeria already improving macroeconomic fundamentals and confidence in the financial system.
Cardoso also stressed that climate risk directly affects financial stability, from sovereign ratings and cost of capital to inflation, food security, and fiscal sustainability, despite Africa contributing the least to global emissions. He noted that the continent’s renewable energy potential, biodiversity, youthful population, and evolving financial markets present major opportunities if countries act collectively.
The engagement highlighted a key priority for Africa: achieving sustainable growth will require a dual commitment to financial stability and climate-conscious development.
