May 04, (THEWILL) — Nigerian content creator, Kevin Chinedu, popularly known for his “Governor Amuneke” persona, has explained why he turned down an offer to serve as a youth ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
His content largely focuses on political satire and holding institutions accountable.
In a video shared on his X handle on Monday, Chinedu said he was contacted for the role via social media and initially felt proud.
“I was contacted to be appointed as INEC Youth Ambassador. First of all, I’ll say congratulations to me and those who supported me. I have never felt as proud of myself when I got that message”, he said.
The position would have involved engaging young Nigerians on civic responsibilities, including voter registration and participation in elections.
However, Chinedu raised concerns about how the appointment might affect his satirical content. While he could still promote civic awareness, he was told he could not directly criticise INEC.
“I asked a simple question. I said, ‘Am I going to still be able to criticise the government if I’m appointed?’ They told me I can still do that and even preach about getting PVCs and all of that. However, I cannot criticise INEC directly”, he said.
Chinedu said the restriction conflicted with the core purpose of his platform, which is rooted in holding institutions accountable and amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians.
He added that his work is driven by real-life experiences, the struggles of Africans, and his own background, and accepting the role under such conditions would have “boxed his voice.”
While declining the offer, he expressed gratitude to those who recommended him and reiterated his openness to collaborations that do not restrict his creative freedom.
He also urged fellow content creators to protect their independence and not compromise their voices for recognition or financial gain.
