Cooling Inflation Raises Prospects of Interest Rate Cut

Inflation-down

February 19, (THEWILL) — A steady moderation in inflation is strengthening expectations that the Central Bank of Nigeria could begin easing monetary policy, offering potential relief to businesses and households facing high borrowing costs.

Recent data shows price pressures gradually softening, with headline inflation slowing to around 18 percent year-on-year, supported by improved exchange-rate stability and easing food prices.

Analysts say the downward trend reinforces confidence that earlier aggressive tightening measures are beginning to yield results, creating room for a policy shift.

Market expectations are increasingly tilted toward a modest rate reduction, with forecasts ranging between 25 and 50 basis points at upcoming policy meetings.

Some economists argue that a larger cumulative cut of over 100 basis points could be justified if the disinflation trend persists, though policymakers are expected to remain cautious to avoid reigniting price pressures.

Interest rates remain elevated following one of the most aggressive tightening cycles in recent years, implemented to curb inflation and stabilise the currency.

While these measures helped anchor expectations, they also constrained credit growth, consumer spending, and private-sector investment.

Financial markets have reacted positively to the prospect of easing, with improved investor sentiment reflecting hopes that lower borrowing costs could support economic recovery.

However, risks such as currency volatility and structural inflation drivers may still influence the pace of policy adjustments.

If inflation continues to decline sustainably, analysts believe the central bank may have sufficient policy space to initiate gradual rate cuts in the months ahead.
