BEVERLY HILLS, November 03, (THEWILL) – A Federal High Court in Abuja Tuesday approved the release of the international travel passport of the immediate past National Security Adviser, Retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki, to enable him seek medical treatment abroad over an ailment.
The federal government is prosecuting the former intelligence chief over allegations of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms. Dasuki pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Dasuki, who was granted conditional bail on self-recognition during his initial arraignment, had applied to the court through his counsel, Mr. J.B.Daudu, for his international travel passport to be released. His application which was filed Monday (yesterday), was opposed by the state.
But Justice Ademola Adeniyi Tuesday in a ruling ordered the release of the documents, which were in the custody of the Deputy Chief Registrar of the High Court.
Justice Adeniyi Ademola also granted the former NSA a 3-week leave to travel.
The judge ordered the registrar to release the documents upon the perfection of the terms attached to an order to that effect.
Dasuki’s bail term included presenting a surety, who would write an undertaking to produce him on the next adjourned date.
Justice Ademola also said that the surety should be ready to take the position of the accused in case the former NSA refuses to appear to answer charges proffered against him.
In the alternative Justice Ademola ordered any of the senior counsel to the accused person to sign an undertaking to take his place, before the international passport of the accused is released.
The judge thereafter adjourned the matter till November 26 and 27, 2015.
