February 20, (THEWILL) —The Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme has significantly strengthened Nigeria’s trade ecosystem, contributing an impressive N362.8 billion in additional Customs revenue.
Launched by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the AEO programme is designed to enhance trade facilitation, improve supply chain security, and foster voluntary compliance among trusted importers and exporters.
According to the NCS, companies enrolled under the scheme have demonstrated higher levels of compliance with Customs regulations, resulting in faster cargo clearance, reduced inspections, and lower transaction costs.
These operational efficiencies have not only improved the ease of doing business but have also translated into substantial revenue gains for the Federal Government.
The Comptroller-General of Customs noted that the programme aligns with international best practices under the World Customs Organization (WCO) framework.
The AEO model is globally recognised for strengthening partnerships between Customs authorities and the private sector, while promoting transparency and accountability in cross-border trade.
Industry stakeholders have commended the initiative, describing it as a milestone in modernising Customs operations and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.
