May 26 (THEWILL) — The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has emerged as a strategic lifeline for Nigeria’s economy, with S&P Global Ratings describing the facility as a critical buffer against growing supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
In an assessment released this week, the global ratings agency said the operational expansion of the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery is helping to strengthen Nigeria’s balance of payments, improve foreign exchange stability, and reduce the country’s vulnerability to global fuel supply shocks.
The recognition marks a significant shift for Africa’s largest oil producer, which for decades depended heavily on imported refined petroleum products despite exporting crude oil.
The refinery is gradually reversing that trend by boosting domestic refining capacity and cutting pressure on foreign reserves.
S&P noted that the refinery has ramped up operations close to full capacity, allowing Nigeria to rely less on imported fuel at a time when instability in the Middle East continues to threaten global energy markets.
The development also comes amid rising concerns over disruptions linked to tensions involving Iran and key oil transit routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which have triggered volatility in global crude and fuel prices.
The refinery’s growing output is already increasing exports of refined petroleum products across Africa, positioning Nigeria as an emerging regional supply hub.
The refinery’s impact has further strengthened investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy.
Earlier this month, S&P upgraded Nigeria’s sovereign credit rating for the first time in 14 years, citing economic reforms, stronger external buffers, and expanding domestic refining capacity.
