September 20, (THEWILL) — The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, on Saturday awarded full scholarships worth over N800 million to 1,000 students of Kano State origin.
The scholarship will cover tuition and related expenses for the beneficiaries throughout their four-year degree programmes.
The students will pursue their studies at the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, through the institution’s study centres established in Kano.
At a ceremony held at the Convocation Arena of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Senator Abdul Rahman Kawu Sumaila presented the award letters on behalf of Senator Jibrin.
Explaining the rationale behind the initiative, Senator Jibrin said it was designed to ease the financial burden of students and promote educational development.
“The initiative reflects my conviction that a nation can only secure its future when its young people are educated and empowered.
“This gesture is aimed at eradicating illiteracy and guaranteeing a brighter tomorrow for our country. We will continue to invest in the education of our youths because it is the surest way to national development,” he said.
He urged the students to work hard and justify the investment made in them.
In his personal capacity, Senator Sumaila also gave each student N20,000 as transport allowance.
Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, who attended the event, praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting Senator Jibrin’s emergence as Deputy Senate President, which, he said, had brought more infrastructure and development projects to Kano State and the Northwest, including the creation of the Northwest Development Commission (NWDC).
Ata commended Jibrin’s empowerment programmes, particularly those targeted at youths, as well as his commitment to granting scholarships to students.
He said the latest initiative would go a long way in helping beneficiaries pursue their educational careers successfully.
