SAN FRANCISCO, June 17, (THEWILL) – Following an allegation of sexual misconduct leveled against by some lawmakers during an official trip to Cleveland, Ohio, United States, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara has ordered a probe into the alleged sex scandal.
The United States, U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle had written a letter to Speaker Dogara, alleging improper conduct, attempted rape and soliciting for prostitutes, against some lawmakers on official trip to the U.S.
The envoy alleged in the June 9 letter that three members of the House – Hon. Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC, Bauchi); Hon. Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Hon. Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue) — while participating in the International Visitor Leadership Programme in the U.S., brought disrepute to the parliament by soliciting for sex from prostitutes. He alleged that Hon. Gololo grabbed a hotel housekeeper while requesting for sex.
Confirming the receipt of the letter to newsmen, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas explained that the leadership of the House decided to investigate the alleged sex scandal following a formal complaint made by the U.S Ambassador.
His words, “We are in receipt of a letter from the US Ambassador, alleging misconduct by some members of the National Assembly, who attended training in the United States of America.
“The leadership of the House has commenced its own part of the investigation. When it is concluded, we will brief Nigerians further on this issue.”
Namdas, while declining to answer how the investigation would be conducted, said: “When we say we will conduct an investigation, we will conduct it and there will be a report.”
