August 02, (THEWILL) – Defence chiefs from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), will on Wednesday, August 2, meet in Abuja, Nigeria, to deliberate on the recent coup in the Republic of Niger.
THEWILL recalls that the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Governments, on Sunday, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger to restore ousted President, Muhammed Bazoum, to office.
As part of resolution of its meeting held in Abuja, the regional bloc also placed sanctions on Niger and warned of possible use of force on the junta, at the expiration of its ultimatum.
The meeting, chaired by Nigeria’s President and chairman of ECOWAS, Bola Tinubu, said it would “take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order if its demands weren’t met within seven days.
“Such measures may include the use of force”, adding that military chiefs are to meet “immediately” to plan for an intervention.
