BEVERLY HILLS, SEPTEMBER 08, (THEWILL) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set September 28, 2016 as the new date for the postponed Edo State Governorship election.
INEC had reluctantly postponed Saturday’s election following the advise of the DSS and the police of an imminent threat to the poll by militants.
Mr. Solomon Soyebi, INEC national Commissioner in-charge of voter education and publicity, made the disclosure at a press conference at INEC’s office in Benin on Thursday.
The poll is a 2-way race between the Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PDP has condemned the shift, accusing the APC, INEC and security agencies of colluding to reschedule the election in order to avert a glaring defeat.
