June 18 (THEWILL) — England kicked off their FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion with a 4-2 victory over Croatia in an entertaining Group-stage clash that delivered goals, drama and moments of brilliance.
The Three Lions made a bright start and took the lead in the 12th minute after captain Harry Kane calmly converted from the penalty spot, handing England an early advantage.
Croatia, however, responded with intent and restored parity in the 36th minute when Martin Baturina unleashed a superb long-range effort that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
England regained control just before halftime as Kane struck again in the 42nd minute, rising highest to power home a header from a corner and complete his brace.
The Croatians refused to back down and found another equaliser deep into first-half stoppage time. Petar Musa capped a swift attacking move with a composed finish in the fifth minute of added time, ensuring both sides went into the break level at 2-2 after a pulsating first half.
England resumed the second half with renewed urgency and reclaimed the lead almost immediately. Jude Bellingham produced a moment of individual brilliance in the 47th minute, driving through midfield before finishing confidently to make it 3-2.
Croatia pushed forward in search of another comeback, but England’s defence held firm while Gareth Southgate’s side continued to threaten on the counter.
The result was sealed in the 85th minute when Marcus Rashford applied a clinical finish after being picked out by Bukayo Saka, putting the contest beyond Croatia’s reach.
The victory gives England a strong start to their World Cup journey, with Kane, Bellingham and Rashford all playing key roles in a performance that highlighted the squad’s attacking quality and resilience.
