August 05, (THEWILL) – Godsgift Ayabowei, a former Niger Delta militant leader, has made a passionate appeal to various political parties, their candidates and former militants, to embrace non-violence in the upcoming governorship election in Bayelsa state, which is scheduled for November 11.
Addressing journalists in Yenagoa, the state capital, Ayabowei also called on ex-agitators to cease media attacks on the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Maj.-Gen. Barry Ndiomu (retd).
Expressing his concerns over potential violence and tension in the Niger Delta region, Ayabowei highlighted the significance of the amnesty programme in diffusing tension among the youth in the Niger Delta. He stressed the need for its sustenance, as it plays a vital role in the economic growth and development of the country.
Ayabowei expressed dismay over recent media-sponsored attacks on the PAP Coordinator by certain individuals within the ex-agitator groups. These attacks have raised concerns about the stability of the region and the effectiveness of the amnesty program. The former militant leader cautioned that such negative comments in the media could undermine the progress achieved so far and disrupt the peace in the region.
“I urge all parties involved to prioritise the greater good and work together towards the actualisation of a better life for the people of the Niger Delta”, Ayabowei asserted, emphasising the importance of collective efforts to maintain peace and foster development in the region.
Addressing a certain first-phase group of agitators in Bayelsa, who expressed discomfort with happenings in the programme, Ayabowei clarified that the statement was taken out of context. He assured that the group never met to discuss such issues and appealed to them to embrace peace, while also refraining from engaging in media attacks.
“Instead of resorting to hostilities, I advocate open communication and constructive dialogue between all parties involved to address any concerns and challenges”, he urged, expressing the need for reconciliation and understanding.
In addition to his call for peace, Ayabowei suggested that the PAP Coordinator continue regular engagement with various groups in the Niger Delta. He stated that such interactions would help build trust and foster a sense of inclusivity, thus uniting different interest groups towards a common goal of a peaceful and prosperous Niger Delta.
