April 19, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for emergency runway repairs.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs Obiageli Orah, said the closure was necessitated by a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.
FAAN said the emergency repairs would be carried out from April 22 to May 6, 2025.
“In compliance with Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, the runway will be closed during this period,” the agency stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to passenger safety and the modernisation of airport infrastructure, FAAN said there would be no landings or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period.
The Authority appealed to airport users and stakeholders for understanding and cooperation, adding that flights would be diverted to nearby airports.
“We sincerely apologise for the late and unexpected notice regarding this closure,” FAAN said.
