March 26, (THEWILL) — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has raised concerns over the rising circulation of substandard and unsafe products in Nigeria, warning that it threatens consumer safety and market confidence.

The Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Tunji Bello, gave the warning in Abuja during the commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day 2026 and the 9th National Consumers Contest Awards.

Speaking on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers”, Bello said uncertainty around product safety is already affecting consumer trust and market behaviour. He was represented by the FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Bola Adeyinka.

Bello revealed that the Commission continues to find many products failing to meet basic safety and quality standards across sectors. These include improperly labelled goods, unsafe products, and cases of misrepresentation by manufacturers and distributors.

He attributed the trend to weak internal controls, poor compliance culture, and, in some cases, deliberate disregard for regulations.

Bello stressed that product safety is a legal obligation under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 and warned that the FCCPC will enforce compliance strictly.

He added that the Commission has expanded market surveillance and strengthened product testing to curb the spread of substandard goods and protect consumers.
