September 16, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a Court of Appeal division in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the development during a special church thanksgiving service to mark the 2025/2026 legal year, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta.
He described the approval as a landmark achievement of his administration’s efforts to bring justice closer to the people, ensure quicker dispensation of cases, and ease the heavy caseload currently borne by the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal.
“We have finally received the formal approval for the establishment of the Ogun State Division of the Federal Court of Appeal in Abeokuta. This is indeed a landmark achievement proudly and aggressively championed by our administration,” Abiodun said.
The governor stressed that justice remains the foundation of every prosperous society, commending the Ogun State judiciary for maintaining its independence and embracing reforms to improve access to justice, reduce case backlogs, and strengthen integrity.
He urged judicial officers to remain committed to fairness, impartiality, and courage, noting that justice can only thrive in a system where the scales remain balanced, the vulnerable are protected, and the law serves every citizen.
Abiodun further assured that his administration would continue to support the judiciary with adequate resources, improved welfare, and housing for judges and staff of the newly approved appellate court.
He also praised the Chief Judge of Ogun State for repositioning the judiciary through reforms and lauded judicial officers for sustaining the state’s reputation as a beacon of the legal profession in Nigeria.
