SAN FRANCISCO, August 14, (THEWILL) – The sum of N8.7billion was okayed by the federal government on Wednesday for the printing and distribution of textbooks for primary one to six pupils and library resources materials for primary schools and junior secondary schools across the country.
Ministers of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’I and Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, who disclosed this at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, said the project will be funded through the 15 percent of the consolidated revenue of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The books are to be made available in six weeks to pupils in primary one to six while the over four million books in English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, Social Studies and Library Resources materials, will be provided free of charge to those in junior secondary schools.
FEC also approved the sum of N2.138 million for a contract for the supply of water to the Abuja technology village and environs; N427 million for tender and design of engineering infrastructure contract in Kyami district along Airport Road and purchase of 40 vehicles as part of the preparation of the National Population Commission (NPC) for the 2016 Census.
Minister of information, Mr. Labaran Maku, while briefing journalists after the FEC meeting, brought memo for the approval of the purchase of the utility vehicles, saying the President has directed that all the vehicles should be purchased locally from indigenous manufacturers, a development, which, according to him, gave the Nnewi-based Innoson Motors Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM), supported by the Bank of Industry, the contract.
