March 09, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has approved a ₦100 billion solar power programme to provide reliable electricity to public institutions across Nigeria.
The initiative, known as the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), will deploy solar mini-grids and renewable energy solutions to power government establishments, universities, hospitals, and other public facilities with unstable electricity supply.
The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, disclosed the development during a visit by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo, to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Aliyu explained that the programme forms part of the Federal Government’s strategy to expand electricity access through renewable energy while reducing dependence on diesel generators and conventional power supply.
According to him, several key government institutions have already begun benefiting from the initiative, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the National Hospital Abuja.
He added that the REA will conduct energy audits in participating institutions to determine the appropriate capacity of solar mini-grid systems required for each facility. The audits will guide the design and deployment of the solar infrastructure, including generation capacity and distribution networks.
The solarisation programme is expected to reduce the high costs of diesel and generator maintenance currently borne by many public institutions, while also supporting Nigeria’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
Experts say the initiative could significantly improve electricity reliability in government offices, universities, and hospitals, thereby enhancing productivity and service delivery.
