June 1 (THEWILL) — African fintech unicorn Flutterwave has surpassed one billion transactions and processed more than $40 billion in total payment value since its launch, underscoring its growing role in Africa’s digital payments ecosystem.

The milestone was disclosed by Flutterwave Founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, in a blog post reviewing the company’s performance and expansion over the past year.

According to Agboola, increasing adoption of local payment methods by businesses and consumers across Flutterwave’s markets significantly contributed to the company’s growth.

He revealed that wallet-based collections recorded a 289 percent increase in transaction volume over the past year, while the value of bank transfer transactions rose by 184 percent.

The figures reflect the rising demand for digital payment infrastructure across Africa, where mobile wallets and bank transfers are becoming increasingly popular among consumers and businesses.

Beyond payments growth, Flutterwave said it continues to invest in its workforce.

The company disclosed that more than 100 employees were promoted during its latest review cycle and announced a one-time economic relief payment for staff globally, including special incentives for employees in Nigeria.

“In Nigeria, where recent tax regulation changes have uniquely impacted take-home pay, we have introduced specific tax adjustment support alongside cost-of-living updates for all eligible employees,” Agboola said.

He added that the company remains committed to sharing the benefits of its growth with employees while maintaining financial discipline.

Flutterwave’s expansion strategy has also included strengthening its financial infrastructure capabilities. In January, the company acquired Nigerian open banking startup Mono in an all-stock transaction.

The deal brings together two major fintech infrastructure providers and enhances Flutterwave’s capabilities in open banking, financial data access, identity verification and account-to-account payments.

According to Agboola, the acquisition reflects Flutterwave’s long-term vision of building the financial infrastructure needed to power Africa’s digital economy.
