January 17, (THEWILL) – The Northern Professionals for Development and Unity has commended former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, for his decision to resign from active partisan politics, describing it as a significant step toward fostering unity and development in Northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Rabiu Dambatta, the group lauded Bafarawa’s vision, emphasising that his move would enhance leadership mentoring and promote initiatives aimed at addressing the region’s pressing challenges.
“This bold decision by Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa is a testament to his commitment to repositioning the North for sustainable growth and unity. His focus on the development and cohesion of the region sets a powerful example for other leaders,” Dambatta stated.
The group noted that Bafarawa’s resignation would pave the way for a renewed focus on addressing key issues such as insecurity, poverty, and the alarming rate of out-of-school children in the region.
It called on other political leaders to emulate Bafarawa’s leadership by prioritizing the collective good over political ambitions.
Reflecting on Bafarawa’s contributions, the group highlighted his 22-year-old blueprint for Northern development, describing it as a “pacesetter” for promoting regional unity, peace, and progress.
“No matter the perspective on his decision, it is clear that Bafarawa’s commitment to garnering support for the North’s realignment and cohesion is commendable.
“His dedication to securing justice, fostering regional harmony, and championing the North’s development remains unparalleled,” the statement added.
The group also urged Northern leaders to tackle the region’s challenges with sincerity, emphasizing that the unity and progress of the North should not be compromised for political gains.
While congratulating Bafarawa on his decision, NOPDU encouraged him to continue identifying and collaborating with credible leaders, including those currently in government, to address the region’s socio-economic challenges.
Last week, Bafarawa formally announced his resignation from Nigeria’s major opposition party in a letter addressed to the party’s National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum.
The letter, personally signed by Bafarawa, signaled his departure from partisan politics and a renewed focus on regional development.
