A pro-democracy outfit, Movement for a Better Lagos, has thrown its weight behind Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State over his appeal to the people of the state to keep calm in the face of the provocative situation created by the scarcity of new naira notes and non-availability of fuel and the crippling effect on the collective and individual economy.
Governor Sanwo-Olu made the appeal in the wake of reported pockets of protests in some parts of the state on Friday, saying the government would soon take steps that would completely normalise the situation. He appealed that rising tempers should be brought down to avoid unnecessary chaos that could truncate the smooth running of democracy in the state.
Comrade Omolola Olukayode, Convener of the Movement, in a statement on Friday, reasoned with Governor Sanwo-Olu that nothing should be done to undermine the forthcoming elections in the state.
According to Omolola, unrest, protest and riots are ways of playing into the hands of anti-democratic forces, who are bent on truncating the smooth process towards the expected change of batons, both at the federal and state levels, by those aiming at setting up an anti-democratic contraption that would pull Nigeria several years back and erase the democratic achievement the country has gained over 20 years back.
Olukayode, therefore, urged the good people of the state to heed the appeal of Governor Sanwo-Olu and make some sacrifices through patience and perseverance to shame the enemies of the country by allowing the election to hold as scheduled.
“The only potent weapon now against the enemies of darkness is safeguarding the Permanent Voter Cards (PVC), in our possession to end all the social and political hiccups confronting the country presently,” she averred.
