November 03, (THEWILL) –Â Heavily armed men on Tuesday killed two policemen on a stop-and-search duty at Diobu axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
A Commander of a local vigilante group in the area, Phalga Security Watch, Victor Ohaji, said the deceased policemen, who were attached to the Mile One Police Division, were gunned down on Okija Street at about 8pm, saying the operatives died on the spot.
Ohaji said the hoodlums drove their vehicle to the checkpoint, attempted to make a U-turn after sighting the policemen but opened fire on two of the security agents, who tried to block them.
When contacted, Spokesman of the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident, adding that the operatives were on stop and search duty.
Omoni, who explained that the vehicle used by the gunmen was abandoned at the scene, said an AK-47 rifle was carted away from one of the slain cops.
“I can confirm the attack by unknown gunmen on our men posted to Okija Street on stop and search. Two Police officers were killed. Investigation has been ordered by the Commissioner of Police.
“One Toyota Corolla, with Reg. No. Rivers ABU 380 AW, used by the attackers, was abandoned. One AK47 Rifle belonging to one of the officers carted away”, he said.
