January 08, (THEWILL) — The Kano State Government has announced the construction of 324 functional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) over the last two years, out of a proposed 483 PHCs across the state’s local government wards.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, who disclosed this in Kano on Thursday, January 8, 2026, stated that the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the delivery of healthcare programs and provide adequate services to the people.
According to Dr. Labaran, the administration inherited a non-functional health system in May 2023, with almost all state hospitals facing significant operational challenges.
The government responded by rehabilitating major facilities, including the Nassarwa, Murtala Mohammed, and Hasiyya Bayero hospitals, along with 16 other hospitals across various local government areas.
At Hasiyya Bayero, the hospital was upgraded to ensure drugs are provided free of charge to children, while support for child delivery at Murtala Mohammed Hospital was doubled from ₦30 million to ₦60 million.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the State Drugs Revolving Scheme, which was left with heavy debts and no supplies by the preceding administration, has been fully revived and is now functioning debt-free.
Regarding future investments, Dr. Labaran revealed that ₦40 billion has been proposed for the health sector in the 2026 budget to consolidate ongoing reforms and upgrade medical equipment across the 44 local government areas.
To address manpower gaps, the state has commenced the recruitment of over 2,600 new health workers, including medical doctors, nurses, midwives, environmental health officers, and laboratory scientists.
Dr. Labaran emphasized that the 2026 budget prioritizes facility renovations and the provision of modern technology to improve emergency response and reduce patient waiting times.
He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his sustained investment in the sector, noting that the governor’s support has been instrumental in improving maternal and child health outcomes and addressing disease outbreaks.
