May 31, (THEWILL) – Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, has narrated some of the things he passed through while in police detention.
The singer had turned himself in after the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, ordered his arrest following a video which surfaced online of the musician assaulting a police officer.
He regained his freedom after spending some days at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba area of Lagos.
Kuti took to Instagram to make a live video where he narrated his experience while in detention.
According to him, he was not remanded in Kirikiri prison but was locked up all day in a police cell with 30 other inmates.
“My first day in prison was difficult. I didn’t go to prison. Na cell them keep me. Actually, I was kept in the police cell. Them no remand me for kirikiri or anything, but I hear say for kirikiri, they allow prisoners out all day, na night you go inside. But for that police station, they just keep you locked up all day.
“They just kept us locked up inside this room with no light. Like 30-something people in a three-person cell. The heat and the smell eh! Oh my God! But after some days, I got used to it. It just became a routine.”
He also disclosed that the rumours of beating his wife and being beaten inside the cell were not true.
According to him, none of such things happened but they are assumptions of bloggers.
“Suddenly, they said I used to beat my wife. Even my daughter, Adara, I’ve never spanked her before. Them say them beat me inside the cell. Nobody beat me inside the cell. There were plans but nothing of such happened,” he revealed.
