March 31, (THEWILL) – The 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has refuted claims that he violated the police ban on the traditional Sallah Durbar in the state.
Speaking through an aide who preferred anonymity, Sanusi clarified that his movements on Sallah Day were routine and did not constitute a Durbar procession.
“What I did was simply move from the Eid ground back to my Gidan Rumfa Palace. It was a normal tradition, not a Durbar,” the Emir said.
He condemned the violence that erupted as he returned to his palace, which reportedly led to the death of one person.
“I was already in my palace when I was informed that some hoodlums attacked vigilance groups. The vigilantes, after arresting some of them, were ambushed on their way back from handing the suspects over to the police, leading to the unfortunate loss of life.
“This shows that some individuals are deliberately trying to create unrest in Kano where there should be none. Their attempt to instigate crisis has failed, but those behind this must be brought to justice,” he added.
Sanusi, however, commended the police and other security agencies for ensuring a peaceful Eid prayer and his safe return to the palace.
The Kano State Police Command had earlier imposed a ban on all Durbar activities during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, citing security concerns and the need to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
