April 16, (THEWILL) – The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 18th governorship election in Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, has been declared the winner of the poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the election inconclusive after several polling units’ results were cancelled.
The cancelled votes were more than the margin of victory between Idris, who polled 388,358 votes and Maj. Gen. Mohammed Bande (rtd) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 342,980 votes.
“We aggregated the total number of collected PVCs in polling units where elections were cancelled and it came to a total of 91,829. And when we checked the results, the two leading political parties in this contest, APC and PDP polled 388,258 and 342,980 votes respectively. When we look at the difference, it stands at 45,278,” the Collation and Returning Officer of the election, Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu of the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, had said.
However, at the end of the gubernatorial supplementary election in the State on Saturday, April 15, Prof. Sa’idu, on Sunday afternoon, declared Nasir Idris of the APC, as Kebbi Governor-elect.
He said Idris polled 409, 225 votes to beat his closest rival, Mohammed Bande of the PDP, who scored 360, 940 votes.
Except for the outstanding result of the Adamawa governorship poll, with the conclusion of the 2023 gubernatorial election held in 28 states, the ruling APC has secured 16 states, leaving the opposition PDP with 9, the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with one State each.
