September 06, (THEWILL) – Outlawed Southeast separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken steps to stop the extradition of some members of the group arrested in Ghana to Nigeria.
THEWILL reports that Ghanaian police officers had arrested some IPOB members during a monthly meeting around Mallam Junction in Accra on Saturday.
However, in a move to block their extradition to Nigeria, Aloy Ejimakor, Special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, said he had sent some legal documents to IPOB’s Directorate of State (DOS), to defend the arrested members.
He explained that the step was to prevent the agitators from being extradited to Nigeria.
In a tweet, Ejimakor wrote: “Update on #IPOB Ghana: A few days ago, I sent to the DOS (via @ChinasaNworu) certain legal documents critical to the defense of the faithfuls currently distressed in Ghana.
“The goal is to quickly secure their freedom and prevent their ‘rendition to injustice’ in Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, DOS has assured Biafrans and friends of Biafra that efforts are being put in place to secure their release.
A statement by the Deputy head of the Directorate of State (DHOD), Mazi Chukwuemeka Nzurumike, accused the Nigerian government of connivance and masterminding the arrest of innocent Biafrans who are exercising their universal right to self-determination which Ghana is signatory to.
The statement read in full: “The Directorate of State (DOD) of the indigenous people of Biafra wishes to familiarize all and sundry that relentless efforts are being deployed in ensuring the total release of the innocent Biafran citizens with legal domiciliation in Ghana. Their freedom was arbitrarily violated recently in what appeared to be in connivance with the oppressive and crumbling regime in Abuja.
“Biafrans in Ghana have always cherished their host country known for its remarkable avowed qualities of civility amongst countries of sub-saharan Africa.
“However, the DOS condemns in strong terms this cruel treatment recently meted out with insularity and parochialism disregarding the rule of law. As a matter of urgency, we call on our friendly nation, Ghana to countermand this unsusceptible approach that reduces the Ghanaian graceful creed that sums up in defense of freedom, rights, and a crave for true humility.
“Biafrans will continue to remain democratically oriented, be law-abiding and promote peace in all host countries around the globe!”
THEWILL had reported Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, was rearrested in May and extradited to Nigeria. He is currently in detention while facing charges of treason, treasonable felony, killing of security operatives, amongst others.
He is expected to appear in court in October for continuation of his trial.
