… Sets Tuesday Meeting With All Aggrieved PDP Governors
SAN FRANCISCO, September 02, (THEWILL) – At the end of the peace meeting between President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, sixteen governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Vice President Namadi Sambo, SGF Anyim Pius Anyim, NSA Sambo Dasuki and PDP attorney, Mr. Joe Gadzama (SAN), party chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and Chief Tony Anenih, the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, inside the presidential villa in the wee hours of Monday, Chief Anenih flanked by Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso of Kano State and President Jonathan, acknowledged the existence of a new faction of the party.
In a communiqué read to journalists, Anenih said, “This evening Mr. President, the leadership of the party and the PDP governors met today to discuss the incident that occurred during the PDP special convention on the 31st of August 2013, whereby some state delegations walked out of the convention ground to announced a faction of the party,” Anenih said
“The meeting was smooth and encouraging and the discussions will continue on Tuesday with all the aggrieved governors in attendance.”
THEWILL recalls that a breakaway faction of the party led by former vice president Atiku Abubakar and seven aggrieved governors alongside almost all the members of the National Assembly from their states, announced the formation of a “new PDP” at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center in Abuja.
The formation of the faction chaired by Abubakar Baraje, and the momentum it has garnered within hours of its announcement had embarrassed and jolted the presidency and the Bamanga Tukur led leadership into action.
THEWILL can report that amongst the demands of the faction are the resignation of Tukur, the recall of suspended Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the return of state party structures to governors and the convening of a fresh national convention of the party.
The faction also wants the President to honour a pact he reached with governors of the party and leaders before the 2011 Presidential election that he would not seek re-election in 2015.
