
June 27, (THEWILL) – Incumbent President, Julius Maada Bio. has won a second term in office as President of Sierra Leone.
The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mohamed Konneh, declared Julius Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), winner of Saturday’s presidential Poll.
Bio polled 1,566,932 (56.1 percent) of votes cast, to beat twelve other candidates including his main rival, Dr Samura Kamara of the All Peoples Congress (APC), who secured 1,148,262 (41.6 percent) votes.
In a tweet shared by Dr Samura, he rejected the results announced, declaring it a frontal attack on the country’s democracy.
“It is a sad day for our beloved country. It is a frontal attack on our fledgling democracy. These results are NOT credible and I categorically reject the outcome so announced by the electoral commission”, Kamara tweeted after the announcement.
However, President Bio has been sworn into office by the Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, Desmond Babatunde Edwards, at the Parliament in Freetown.
