January 23, (THEWILL) – The Kano State Government has distributed 7,158 goats to 2,386 beneficiaries as part of its economic empowerment programme aimed at combating poverty and promoting economic self-reliance.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists in Kano.
Mahmoud stated that under the initiative, each beneficiary received three goats as part of the Livestock Fattening Programme under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.
He further revealed that 1,975 rams were distributed to 987 beneficiaries, with each recipient getting two rams, alongside three months’ supply of feed and drugs to aid livestock fattening.
Similarly, 1,400 bulls were given to 700 beneficiaries, with each receiving two bulls along with the necessary feed and medication for three months.
Mahmoud said the state government spent a total of N2.23 billion on the exercise, underscoring its commitment to supporting farmers and livestock owners to boost their income and economic prospects.
THE WILL recalls that Governor Abba Yusuf recently launched the second phase of the women empowerment initiative under the KSADP Livestock Fattening Programme.
During the launch, Yusuf emphasised the government’s focus on reducing poverty and enhancing self-reliance through the empowerment of women across the 44 local government areas of the state.
He noted that the distribution of livestock to women was a strategic step to foster economic stability and improve livelihoods in Kano State.
