March 17, (THEWILL) – Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano says his administration will conduct a ‘Pay Parade’ to determine the actual number of workers on the state’s payroll.
Yusuf said the measure would also enable the government to ascertain the actual amount of money the government is paying per worker.
He disclosed this shortly after he received the report of a special committee set up to investigate complaints of discrepancies arising from the payment of workers’ February salaries.
He said the State Government would set up a powerful committee in April that would conduct the exercise in all the state’s ministries and parastatals.
“The pay parade is the only way we can know the actual number of the civil servants; it is the only way we can know how much is paid per head”, the governor said.
He said part of his campaign promise was that if elected, he would ensure prompt payment of workers’ salaries, as well as ensure full stoppage of all illegal and rampant deductions and underpayment of workers’ entitlements.
He assured that all the recommendations of the committee would be looked into and implemented for the good of the service.
“Those that were not comfortable, if they go against the wishes of the civil service, I will personally change them for the betterment of the civil service”, Yusuf warned.
THEWILL recalls that the State Government had directed that civil servants in the state validate their salaries for the month of March before payment, so as to guard against any discrepancies in the process.
It directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure that their workers verify the salaries put on their names and report any observed discrepancies for necessary action.
The workers’ salary lists would be pasted at strategic places in the premises of the MDAs and the Secretariats of the 44 local governments in the state to facilitate the process.
The government set up a committee headed by the Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, to facilitate the exercise.
