January 01, (THEWILL) – The Amalgamated Cow Milk Dealers Association of Kano State has urged the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project to expedite the completion of Milk Collection Centres across the state to enhance milk storage and business operations.
Chairman of the association, Muhammad Lawan Alaramma, made the appeal on Wednesday during an interaction with journalists at the Kofar Wambai Milk Market in Kano.
Alaramma emphasised that the completion of the centres would significantly improve milk storage facilities and boost the overall trade of the commodity in Kano and beyond.
He also called for the speedy completion of the cold storage room being constructed at the market by KSADP, noting that equipping it with solar-powered generators would help preserve the freshness of milk stored at the facility.
“Once completed, these centres and the cold room will revolutionize milk storage and trade across all selling points in Kano State, ensuring freshness and reducing spoilage,” he said.
Highlighting the market’s scale, Alaramma disclosed that over two million litres of milk are sold daily, with supplies sourced from various states, including Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Plateau.
He added that the market records transactions worth over N200 million daily, facilitated by the more than 20,000 union members, many of whom are young men and women.
He commended the Islamic Development Bank for its contributions through KSADP, which have included roofing, interlocking, and providing a cold room for the Kofar Wambai Milk Market.
“Before the roofing and interlocking were provided, the market was nearly inaccessible during the rainy season due to waterlogging,” he stated.
THEWILL gathered that KSADP is actively constructing and equipping Milk Collection Centres in various milk-producing communities across Kano State. Each centre is designed with a 550-litre milk storage tank, solar-powered borehole, toilet facilities, solar lighting, and an office to streamline operations.
The association called on the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the timely completion of these facilities to support the milk trade and enhance livelihoods across Kano State.
