December 04, (THEWILL) – In a bid to curb corruption and enhance passenger experience, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the dismantling of joint inspection tables operated by multiple security agencies at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The directive, part of the new Operation Air Clean initiative, aims to eliminate unprofessional practices and harassment often associated with the manual screening process at the airport. For years, stakeholders have criticized the search tables as conduits for extortion and unnecessary infractions imposed on travelers.
Under the new arrangement, inspections will transition to intelligence-based searches and advanced scanning technology, coupled with passenger profiling to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Additionally, observation zones equipped with surveillance cameras will provide real-time monitoring of critical areas, bolstering transparency and accountability.
Keyamo emphasised the need for professional conduct, warning that misconduct within the airport premises would no longer be tolerated.
The directive mandates the integration of security agencies into streamlined checkpoints, with collaboration between the Department of State Services and Immigration officials to improve efficiency.
Customs officials will now conduct currency declaration procedures at Aviation Security screening points, optimizing the process while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Arriving passengers will undergo secondary screenings in designated profiling rooms at Terminals 1 and 2.
These rooms will display real-time information about the officers on duty, including names, agencies, and contact details, ensuring transparency in search procedures.
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency personnel will also partner with AVSEC officers at screening points, conducting roving checks in arrival halls to strengthen security oversight.
To deter illegal activities, a mobile court will be established at the airport to expedite the prosecution of offenders, including touts and unauthorized personnel.
Bureau de Change operators and car hire staff found loitering or engaging in unapproved activities will face immediate sanctions, including possible suspension or revocation of licenses.
Commenting on the reforms, Keyamo expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to aligning Nigeria’s airports with international standards.
“These measures represent a significant step toward improving security, service delivery, and transparency at our airports. I commend the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria for its proactive leadership and assure Nigerians of the government’s dedication to advancing the aviation sector,” the Minister stated.
