BEVERLY HILLS, October 12, (THEWILL) – A chemical explosion which rocked the Oworonsoki area of Lagos, Sunday afternoon, injured a baby girl and three other persons.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the explosion which occurred at about 1pm in a locked-up beer parlour along L & K Road, the Inward Mayaki, Oworonsoki, sent shivers down the spines of Lagos residents with many scampering for safety.
The South West Zonal Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye,who confirmed the incident said that the victims were taken to a private hospital facility in the neighbourhood.
“The State Fire Service and the Police are presently trying to find out the cause of the explosion as the shop is still locked at the time of explosion.”
“The crowd is impeding the emergency works but the NEMA officials and the policemen had told the people to leave the area immediately.”
“The explosion, however, led to the partial collapse of a building next to the beer parlour but no one was injured from the collapse.” Farinloye said.
In the same vein,the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, told NAN that the service received a distressed call from the area at about 1.30 pm, stressing that firemen from the Ilupeju Fire Station were quickly dispatched to the place.
“The distress call came in at about 1:30 pm and I quickly dispatched firemen from the Ilupeju Fire Station to the location.”
“Initially the report we had was that a building collapsed, but on arrival at the scene, we discovered that it was an explosion from a locked up shop.”
“Investigations by our men revealed that the explosion came from a freezer in one of the shops, due to electrical surge,” Fadipe was quoted as saying.
